So, they’re cutting capacity 50%, and still anticipate 20-30% load factors - if things don’t get worse.
They’re also cutting corporate officer salaries in half.
I am no United fan, but this is going on across the industry. Then there’s hotels, restaurants, entertainment etc etc etc.
I get that it's necessary but the effects arw far reaching.

A travel addict friend of mine is finding $800 RT flights to Australia from Seattle, and losing his mind. I told him to buy the travel insurance, and make sure it covers any reason.

Could be worse - in this part of the world, Air New Zealand have cut services by 85% across their global network, announced they’re laying off 1/3 of their staff (and forecasting more) and are talking to the government about a bailout.

Yep, it’s going to be everyone. United right now is probably wishing that the government tells them they can’t fly, it would give them a better case for a bailout if they are shut down directly.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, my parents’ flight back from the UK has been canceled by Virgin, but they’ve managed to get on another one into JFK followed by a Delta flight to get back here (we’ll see if they can actually make that connection, but worst case at that point they can just rent a car).

Yikes, makes you wonder how the mom and pop motels and businesses dependent on tourists will weather this.

At this rate you wouldn't be allowed back in. I guess being stuck in Hawaii when everyone else is forced to stay inside wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.....

Definitely worse places to be. I assume you’d be housed for free, too.
Was going to go to Canada with a friend yesterday, but he got cold feet fearing a border closure. Today it’s in the realm of possibility.

My other brother is a UAL mechanic. He’s got some seniority; he was furloughed after 9-11 and finally came back to work. We’ll see what happens.

Bailout or bankruptcy will be the outcome for US airlines as well. They've been promised support already, though without specifics.

Just six months ago I was getting pressure from the flight school to go all the way to ATP because the perceived demand for pilots was so high. Thankfully, a career change didn’t interest me.

Tourism, which is New Zealand’s biggest export earner, is dead in the water as of March 14th when we imposed 2 weeks self-isolation on anyone entering the country from anywhere, and banned all cruise ships outright. The government’s expected to announce a massive economic package today which I imagine will be pretty heavily slanted towards keeping food on the tables of the large numbers of low-wage workers who depended on that industry.
I imagine tourism’s in a pretty similar boat worldwide
- we’re just lucky enough to have a government at present with some experience in crisis management, and who go into this with a strong economic position that’ll allow them to firehose money if they need to.

Friend in Ireland said that on their news tonight they were saying that 7% of the Irish workforce have lost their jobs SINCE LAST
THURSDAY. Absolutely mind-blowing impact, even if it only lasts a few weeks.

Package has just been released. It turns out to be economy-wide rather than just tourism targeted, and they’ve gone in boots and all.
Any business which can show they’ve suffered >30% revenue loss due to coronavirus gets a $7000 lump sum subsidy for each worker (equating to 3 months’ of minimum wage) provided they guarantee to keep them employed. Plus government funded sick leave for those with coronavirus. Plus some benefits increases,
and
tax rules
changed
to allow the self employed to defer their tax bill
. Comes to something like 4% of GDP pumped into the economy in one hit. And they’re saying there will be more in May if needed. Someone’s obviously decided that it’s time to smash the piggy bank...

A couple I know flew to Hawaii on the cheap and now they’ll be there indefinitely because everything is dirt cheap since there’s nearly zero demand. Their employers closed up a couple weeks ago, so there isn’t even a reason to come back.

for the flights I would’ve taken to Sebring, and the planes were mostly empty now:
